WHEELING, (W.Va.) – Local children with asthma have the opportunity to attend summer camp designed to teach them how to handle their asthma more independently thanks to scholarships from Ohio Valley Medical Center.

Camp Catch Your Breath, located at Jackson’s Mill in Weston, W.Va., provides a fun, educational experience for children who might not otherwise be able to attend summer camp because of their asthma. Staffed with a physician and respiratory therapists and nurses as counselors, the camp allows children to participate in games, sports, swimming, and crafts.

“During the camp, children will learn by sharing their experiences, making decisions about their conditions, and expressing their feelings about having asthma,” said Melanie Collinvitti, respiratory therapist at OVMC and camp counselor. “The camp has taught children how to manage their asthma for 24 years, and OVMC has been involved for 23 of those years. We are proud to continue our support and efforts to increase children’s knowledge of asthma.”

Camp Catch Your Breath is for children ages eight to 13. Camp goals are:  enhancing self-esteem, improving self-management as well as mental, physical, and social well-being, and providing a fun camp experience in a safe and healthy environment.

OVMC provides scholarships to cover most costs for area children attending the event, and these sponsorships reduce the application fee for families. For families who cannot afford the fees, scholarships are available through the hospital. Major camp sponsors are United Hospital Center and the American Lung Association as well as six other hospitals across West Virginia. OVMC is the only local hospital sponsor.

Families interested in attending the camp may contact Collinvitti at (304) 234-8897 to receive an application.
