OPALS Set to Celebrate the National Anthem Anniversary

WHEELING, W.Va. – Active seniors have an opportunity to travel to Baltimore this fall on a bus trip, sponsored by Older People with Active Lifestyles (OPALs) organization at Ohio Valley Medical Center, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of American's national anthem

Scheduled for Sept. 14 through Sept. 16, the trip will host people ages 55 or older to Baltimore's Inner Harbor to celebrate the Star Spangled Banner. The harbor's celebration will host tall military ships, Navy gray hulls, and Blue Angels, which is the Navy's flight demonstration squadron. Land-side festivals include re-enactments, a family fun-zone, live musical performances, and Chesapeake food and beverages. The events crescendo on Sept. 13 with a star-studded patriotic concert and fireworks display over Fort McHenry and the Baltimore harbor.

“We are excited for this trip as there will many memorable events for our attendees,” said Mary Velez, corporate director of volunteers and wellness at OVMC and East Ohio Regional Hospital. “Some of the main highlights of the trip will include touring the home where the American flag was sown which inspired the National Anthem, visiting the Maryland Historical Society to view paintings, items, and documents from the War of 1812, as well as a touring the city's quaint waterfront neighborhoods.”

OPALs program at OVMC and East Ohio Regional Hospital consists of a group of residents in the Ohio Valley, ages 55 years and older, who are active and want to remain active. The organization’s goal is to provide education and experiences that promote wellness and well-being. Membership benefits include: free parking, free yearly cholesterol screenings, educational programs, free exercise classes, organized day and multi-day trips, social activities, discounts at the hospital gift shop and cafeteria, as well as a free subscription to a monthly newsletter.
