OVMC Emergency Medicine Residents Honored for their Research

Two Physicians earn second place and $200 for their efforts.

Mountain State Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institutions, Incorporated (MSOPTI), awarded fourth­ year emergency medicine residents, Jennifer Zernec, D.O., and Heather McArthur, D.O., with second place, and $200 for their research poster titled “Correlation of LEON Assessment and Successful Endotracheal Intubation in Prehospital Flight MSOPTI’s Research Day was held in Charleston, W.Va., and brought medical residents from facilities throughout the Mountain state. Jennifer Zernec says their poster was the cumulation of three years of research.

“Our goal is to increase the safety of patients by giving the air flight crews a set of tools they can use to decide if an intubation is likely to be successful or unsuccessful so that they can get extra tools or extra help, thus allowing them to be prepared for “We literally went through more than two thousand intubations, and medical charts with each case,” said Heather McArthur. “For us, I think it was eye­opening to see what is happening in the field versus what we deal with when the patient gets to us in the emergency room.” McArthur said conducting the research also gave her, and Zernec the opportunity to understand what nurses and medics are having to handle, and deal with amid the flight noise, and the chaos that’s taking place in the field where the trauma event is unfolding.The duo’s poster will go on to be entered in two more competitions in the

The duo’s poster will go on to be entered in two more competitions in the coming months. They say they are hopeful their research will aid in safer, and more effective intubations that will help save lives of trauma patients.

Mountain State Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institutions, Incorporated is a comprised of a central member, the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, located in Lewisburg, West Virginia, and its partner training institutions.
