EORH Celebrates National Cardiac Rehabilitation WeekFriday, February 19, 2016
East Ohio Regional Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Team is “Changing Lives One Heart at a Time”, and honoring that theme initiated by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) this week and every week.
Cardiac Rehabilitation Week aims to educate the community about the role of cardiac rehabilitation in enhancing the quality of life of individuals with heart disease. This week coincides with both Valentine's Day and the American Heart Month in an effort to draw greater attention to heart health. This year's theme, "Changing Lives One Heart at a Time," honors the patients, families, and healthcare professionals who are dedicated to cardiac rehabilitation as a vehicle for a healthy lifestyle.
“It helps them to get back to their normal state,” said Dr. Joseph Gabis, M.D., Medical Director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Department. “We hope to get them to improve on their normal state, to get them active. By being here with other cardiac patients they realize they are not alone. They get support, and they find out about nutrition”. Dr. Gabis continued, saying, “ It’s socialization as well, and that helps them quite a bit because after a cardiac event some of the patients are depressed, and this helps their body and soul.”
“I’ve been a patient here for 20 years, and I could go to other facilities and not pay a dime, but the people here at EORH’s Cardiac Rehab facility are what keep me coming back,” said Stanley Wilk, a 90-year-old patient from Lansing, OH. “The staff is very devoted. I’m suffering from atrial fibrillation. I’ve had several times where I’ve had trouble breathing, and within seconds, they had me upstairs and took care of me.”
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Department at EORH houses state-of -the-art exercise equipment, along with registered nurses who provide monitored and supervised exercises. Olivia Miller, R.N., and Cardiac Rehabilitation Clinical Coordinator says, “We pride ourselves on meeting the individual needs of each patient, so to hear that they love our staff is a compliment to us however, it’s really the patients that work so hard here.”
Patients who have suffered cardiac events such as a heart attack, myocardial infarction, angina, valve replacement or repair, bypass surgery, heart failure, and a heart or lung transplant will attend rehab two to three times a week and will do various exercises based upon their limitations.
