CentreTown Fitness and Wheeling Nailers Athletic Trainer Set to Train NHL ChampionsMonday, July 26, 2010
CentreTown Fitness and Wheeling Nailers athletic trainer Jerry Duncan will train the three-time Stanley Cup champions Pittsburgh Penguins this summer.
After just one year of working with the Wheeling Nailers, Duncan was offered the position to work with one of the top teams in the National Hockey League.
"It was something I couldn't pass up," he said. "This was an opportunity I had always dreamed of and when I get to participate each year, that dream becomes a reality over and over again."
Duncan began his experience as a trainer during college for the Mercyhurst College hockey team while earning a degree in sports medicine. He then moved on to West Virginia University to obtain a master's in athletic training. Duncan became the top candidate for the athletic training vacancy with the Wheeling Nailers, a minor league affiliate of the Penguins.
Through his work with the Nailers, Duncan was asked to train and assist the players of the Pittsburgh Penguins during their summer training camp at the Southpointe Iceoplex in Canonsburg, PA. He has been participating at the camp for four years.
While the camp runs through a five-day period, Duncan says day one's routine physicals are always a favorite.
"I am always amazed at the power and ability the professional players like Sidney Crosby have and how good of shape they are in," said Duncan.
When he isn't working with professionals, Duncan works with local athletes and fitness club members at CentreTown Fitness. CentreTown's General Manager, George Frazier says he's proud to have Duncan as a part of his staff.
"It is nice to have someone as experienced and as qualified as Jerry working with us," said Frazier. "He's able help our customers receive the same high-quality services as the best players in the NHL."
