Programs and Services
Respiratory Care
Ohio Valley Medical Center and East Ohio Regional Hospital offer full-service respiratory departments offering a variety of testing and education programs for the inpatient and outpatient population with lung problems. We help patients with asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, COPD and other restrictive obstructive lung diseases. We assist adults as well as children.
Comprehensive Asthma Programs
We provide a comprehensive and complete asthma program including asthma testing, diagnosis, management and asthma education. Our team is able to identify triggers and disease severity while providing one-on-one education to manage symptoms and to teach patients about their maintenance and acute medications, prevention of emergency room visits and prevent hospital admisions through education and peak flow monitoring.
Smoking Cessation Counseling
We offer both inpatient and outpatient counseling for individuals who wish to enlist assistance in quitting smoking. We assist patients to understand cravings and how to deal with the habit of smoking. We provide one-on-one sessions that are provided so the program can meet each patient's individualized needs.
What is COPD? Am I at risk?
COPD is a serious lung disease that over time makes it difficult to breathe. You may have heard COPD called by other names such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis. Those who suffer from COPD may have partly blocked airways - tubes that carry the air in and out of your lunngs - which makes it hard to get good breaths of air. Symptoms include constant coughing sometimes called "smoker's cough", shortness of breath while doing activities you used to be able to do, excess sputum production, wheezing or difficulty breathing.
What can I do?
Your physician can order a test to find out if you have COPD or lung disease. Pulmonary function testing can detect COPD before symptoms become severe. It is a simple breathing test that measures the amount of air a person can blow out of the lungs and how fast he or she can blow the air. This test can help your physician determine the best course of treatment, if needed.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Pulmonary rehabilitation is an eight-week program that provides the participant with information and support to meet the challenges of living with a chronic lung disorder. Each participant receives an individualized treatment plan consisting of education and exercise recommendations.
