East Ohio Regional Hospital and Ohio Valley Medical Center are the only area hospitals to earn The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval ® for Joint Replacement Knee and Hip Certification. The Gold Seal of Approval ® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care. OVMC and EORH underwent rigorous onsite reviews in 2015. Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with national Joint Replacement care standards as well as with joint knee and hip replacementspecific requirements.Clinical practice guidelines and performance measures also were assessed.

"We now have worldclass orthopedics right here at East Ohio Regional,” said Dr. John Michalski, chairman of orthopedics at East Ohio Regional Hospital. “We, at EORH, are first in the tristate area to receive Joint Commission Accreditation for our total hips and knees, first time in the region to have visiting professorship, first in the region to have precise patientmatched knees, first in the region to provide stem cell use for joint healing, first in the region for successful direct anterior hip replacement for a quicker recovery, and first in the nation to have a research site for disposable instruments. All of this plus the shortest hospital stay with the lowest infection rates in Ohio.” Dr. Michalski added, “I am so pleased with our operating room, nursing, therapy, and support staff. We have worked so hard for this honor and award.”

As the chairman of orthopedics at Ohio Valley Medical Center, Dr. Robert Caveney has been performing total hip and knee joint replacements for the last 35 years and says OVMC has established a dedicated orthopedic floor focusing on total joint replacement and the rehabilitation process. “In the last five years we have raised the bar in providing excellence in total joint replacement for the people of the Ohio Valley,” stated Dr. Caveney. “We are pleased to offer this level of care and expertise and to be recognized for our achievements.”

Established in 2002 and awarded for a twoyear period, The Joint Commission’s DiseaseSpecific Care Certification evaluates clinical programs across the continuum of care and addresses three core areas:

● Compliance with consensus based national standards;

● Effective use of evidence based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care;

● An organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.

"Our organization is pleased to receive Joint Replacement Hip and Knee Certification from The Joint Commission, the premier healthcare quality improvement and accrediting body in the nation,” added Michael Caruso, president and chief executive officer of Ohio Valley Health Services and Education Corporation. “The certification provides us with the framework to create a culture of excellence for those in our community.”

"Ohio Valley Medical Center and East Ohio Regional Hospital has thoroughly demonstrated a high level of care for patients with joint replacement of the knee and hip,” said Wendi J. Roberts, RN, executive director, Certification Programs, The Joint Commission. “We commend EORH for becoming a leader in Joint Replacement of Knee and Hip care, potentially providing a higher standard of service for joint replacement patients in its community.” Ohio Valley Medical Center, located in Wheeling, W.
