OVMC to Host International Triathlete for Diabetes Awareness and Education Event

Monday, December 5, 2011

Ohio Valley Medical Center will host a community education event, Living with Diabetes, an educational event professional triathlete Tom Kingery for an educational seminar about the advances in diabetes management and alternate treatment options. The event will take place July 20.

Kingery is a member of Team Type 1 (TT1), the world\'s only professional triathlon team with a roster that includes members who have Type 1 diabetes. Kingery was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 28 years old.

"This is a great opportunity to reach out to the community we serve and educate our patients as well as the rest of the Ohio Valley who may be struggling with type one diabetes or who know someone who is struggling with this disease," said Heather Leonard, certified diabetic educator at Ohio Valley Medical Center and East Ohio Regional Hospital.

According to the American Diabetes Association, as many as three million people in the United States are living with Type 1 diabetes. Each year, more than 15 thousand children – 40 per day – are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes across the United States.

"Living with diabetes can be quite an adjustment for patients and their families," said Leonard. "However, a diagnosis does not mean a patient and family can no longer live a normal life. There are multiple treatment options and almost always a positive outcome for patients which is why it\'s such a great opportunity for members of the Ohio Valley to meet Simon and allow him to share his story."

The event will take place July 20 at the OVMC Nurses\' Residence at 3:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided. For more information or to reserve your spot, please call (304) 234-8135.
